Working for EarlyBird

Working in the Netherlands, Working for EarlyBird

EarlyBird
All over the world young children are taught foreign languages. In 2002 the Treaty of Barcelona was signed in which agreements were made concerning internationalisation and the teaching of foreign languages in primary schools. In 2003 the Rotterdam School Board (BOOR) set up a pilot project, EarlyBird, to offer extra English to very young children at their schools. Over the years EarlyBird has grown from supervising a local project to a nationally operating centre of expertise and works in close cooperation with its network of nearly 100 primary schools. As well as English programmes as part of the school curriculum EarlyBird now also offers programmes for playgroups and nurseries, and extra-curricular and after-school activities in English.

EarlyBird and Extra-Curricular/After-School Activities
EarlyBird is currently recruiting activity coaches to give English extra-curricular or after-school courses in the greater Rotterdam area and Capelle aan den IJssel at different primary schools. If you would like more information about working as an activity coach please contact Joyce Schrijver.

You don’t need to be a qualified teacher to apply, but you do need to have an excellent command of English and have an affinity with children. See more details here. Working as an activity coach involves you working on a freelance basis and remuneration is via a payroll bureau.

EarlyBird and (Near) Native Speakers
Vacancies at EarlyBird schools for (Near) Native Speakers are posted on the website. EarlyBird schools only recruit candidates with an excellent command of English who are also fully qualified primary school teachers. TEFL certificates or equivalents do not count as primary teaching qualifications. EarlyBird prefers recognition of foreign teaching qualifications to have been completed before applying (see links below), but will also consider EU nationals who have not yet taken this step.

Working as a teacher in the Netherlands
Application form for a Dutch teaching qualification

On completion of a contract a statement of good behaviour will be required.

Non-EU citizens must keep in mind that work permits are very hard to obtain in the Netherlands. Teachers must obtain residence permits and work visas for this country. EarlyBird schools will be unable to offer you a contract unless you have a work permit and recognised teaching qualifications.

See more details here of working at an EarlyBird school. If you would like more information about working as a (Near) Native Speaker please contact Caroline Teunissen.
